Add Advanced stats for Unbounded volunteers - #9166
A subtle Advanced stats › link at the bottom of the Action Mode status card opens a bottom sheet showing:
Current speed: ↓ to the people helped · ↑ from them
Data relayed this session and all time, each with a ↓/↑ breakdown
Countries you've helped: the top 5 by data, with flag, name and "920 MB · 4 people"
In Share My Connection mode, a note replaces the live rows. Byte counts exist only for Unbounded. All-time and country totals from earlier Unbounded sessions still show.
How
Data source: the new bytesDown / bytesUp / peerBytes fields on the unbounded-snapshot event (getlantern/radiance#682).
Turning counters into deltas (RelayCounterTracker, lib/core/models/relay_stats.dart)
Lifetime totals are saved together with a watermark: the backend epoch and the bytesDown/bytesUp values already counted. After an app restart, the first snapshot of the same epoch counts from that watermark, so bytes relayed while the app was closed (desktop backend kept running) are counted, and nothing is counted twice.
A first snapshot from a different epoch counts its full values. With no saved watermark (fresh install, or settings saved by an older build), the first snapshot only sets a baseline.
Per-IP counters are never saved, since that would put peer IPs on disk. So after an app restart, per-IP counters (and the country totals built from them) restart from a baseline.
If either the down or the up counter is lower than last seen, both count as reset and the delta is the current pair. Radiance restarts both counters of a pruned IP at 0 together.
Resets don't change the speed figure, so restarts don't cause spikes.
Countries
Each IP's bytes and arrivals are assigned to a country through the existing cached GeoLookupService.peerLookup.
Unresolved IPs go to an Unknown bucket, never a guessed country.
A person counts as an arrival when their IP first appears in peers or peerBytes, so short sessions are counted too.
Saving
New AppSetting fields: unboundedBytesDown, unboundedBytesUp, unboundedCountryStats, plus the watermark unboundedRelayEpoch / unboundedRelayMarkDown / unboundedRelayMarkUp. Older saved settings load with zeros and an empty epoch.
They are written at most every 30s, since each AppSetting write re-saves the whole settings object. A save the throttle holds back is deferred to the end of the window, not dropped, so a country lookup that finishes late is still saved even if no further snapshot arrives.
They are also written immediately when sharing stops, fails, Unbounded becomes unavailable, or a snapshot reports the backend stopped, so its final counters aren't left waiting on the throttle.
A snapshot that only moves the watermark (for example the first baseline on a fresh install) is saved too, so the next launch resumes from it instead of taking another baseline.
Older radiance: snapshots without the new fields still work. The live rows show "—".
Formatting: a new int.siBytes helper gives SI units. The only existing formatter, in report-issue, uses 1024-based units.
Known limits
Country totals: bytes a peer relayed between the app's last save and its next launch aren't attributed to a country (the all-time total does include them when the backend epoch is unchanged). This follows from not saving peer IPs.
If the app quits within 30s of the last save, up to 30s of country attribution is lost. All-time bytes are recovered from the watermark if the backend kept running.
The 12 new advanced_stats* strings are in en.po only, so they need translation.
flutter analyze --no-pub --no-fatal-infos --no-fatal-warnings (as CI runs it) on all changed Dart files: no issues.
dart format is not checked by CI. New files are formatted; the two pre-existing model files that were already unformatted on main were left alone to keep the diff small.
relay_stats_test.dart (16 tests) covers:
the baseline, per-IP deltas, paired down/up resets in both directions, and new epochs
resuming from a saved watermark in the same epoch, a different epoch, and with no watermark
an IP that disconnected recently, and a peer seen only in peerBytes
older radiance, and junk in peerBytes
country ordering, saved-settings round-trips (including the watermark), and SI formatting
8 new ShareNotifier tests in snapshot_test.dart, against the real notifier. They include resuming after an app restart, a deferred (throttled) save, saving the baseline watermark, and saving a stopped backend's final counters at once.
4 new widget tests:
opening the sheet from the link in light and dark themes
country ordering
the empty state at 2× text on a 320×568 screen
the Share My Connection note
flutter test test/core test/features test/lantern test/*.dart: all 456 tests pass.
Not yet checked on a device, or against a real radiance build that sends the new fields.
Risk
Low blast radius: the sheet is opt-in behind a link, and the counters only feed display figures and AppSetting.
Riskiest file: lib/features/action_mode/provider/share_notifier.dart. It runs on every unbounded-snapshot event, and its relay-stats path now also writes AppSetting (throttled to every 30s, plus a deferred trailing write). A bug there could cause extra settings writes or wrong totals. It can't break sharing itself, since the existing peer and arrival logic is unchanged.
The new AppSetting keys are additive. Older builds ignore them.
How to revert
Revert the merge commit. The added AppSetting keys stay in saved settings but are ignored by older code. No migration, flag or config to undo.
Pre-PR review (local Codex gate)
This gate was run after the PR was opened, against the branch as pushed.
lib/core/models/relay_stats.dart:206 — per-IP (and total) resets were detected per direction, so a reconnect where only one counter fell undercounted the other direction (r1)
lib/core/models/relay_stats.dart:195 — the first snapshot after an app restart was always discarded as a baseline, so bytes relayed by a still-running backend while the app was closed were lost; now resumes from a persisted epoch + counter watermark (r1)
lib/features/action_mode/provider/share_notifier.dart:651 — throttled saves were dropped without a trailing flush, so a country lookup finishing after the forced save could stay unsaved indefinitely (r2)
Proposed AGENTS.md additions: one rule, since data loss in relay-stat persistence came up in three rounds (Codex r1 and r2, then Copilot): "When totals are persisted on a throttle, check that every state change the next run depends on (watermarks as well as totals) is marked dirty, and that a throttled or final save is deferred or forced, never dropped."
Post-PR review
Copilot review 1 (budget 1) at a30b4e25f: 2 findings, both fixed in a3a8065c3:
share_notifier.dart:545: a stopped backend's final counters waited on the throttle
share_notifier.dart:578: a baseline-only watermark was never marked dirty
advanced_stats_sheet.dart:182: a country row with only baseline, restored or new-epoch bytes showed "0 people". Fixed in a1b63d434, which now omits the people label at 0.
share_notifier.dart:625: a snapshot missing bytesDown is fed to the tracker as 0. Pushed back: radiance#682's counter fields have no omitempty and its epoch is fixed when the process starts, so whether the fields are present depends only on the build, and a build change starts a new epoch. CodeRabbit withdrew the finding.
Copilot review 2 (budget 1, requested manually because the push didn't start one) at a1b63d434: 2 findings, both fixed in e70b95e34:
share_notifier.dart:540 (inline, high): SmC returned early and skipped relay accounting, so Unbounded's final flushed bytes were missed if SmC started before the next poll. SmC now folds the counters in and saves them without touching SmC's state.
share_notifier.dart:634 (summary-only "previously missed", medium): the arc and stats paths requested the geo lookup for the same new peer twice. peerLookup now shares a lookup that's still in flight for the same IP.
Adds a low-emphasis "Advanced stats" link at the bottom of the Action
Mode status card that opens a bottom sheet with current relay speed,
data relayed this session and all time, and the top countries helped
(data and people per country).
ShareNotifier now reads the bytesDown/bytesUp/peerBytes counters that
radiance adds to the unbounded-snapshot event. RelayCounterTracker turns
the cumulative per-epoch counters into deltas: the first snapshot after
launch is only a baseline, and a new epoch or a counter that goes
backwards counts from zero. Per-IP deltas are attributed to countries
via the cached GeoLookupService.peerLookup, with unresolved peers in
their own Unknown bucket. Lifetime bytes and per-country totals persist
in AppSetting, written at most every 30s and on stop. Snapshots from
older radiance without the counters are tolerated. SmC has no byte
counters, so the sheet shows a note instead of zeros there.
New strings are in en.po only and still need translating.

The inspected changes preserve aggregate-only storage and use the existing geolocation destination. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns restart accounting, backend compatibility, and persistence guarantees rather than demonstrated privilege expansion or unauthorized access.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected change affects one application's local relay statistics and requests to its existing geolocation service. Attribution can now look up historical peer-byte entries that are no longer active, including while another sharing mode is selected. That broadens lookup timing and eligible records, but does not establish a new destination or cross-tenant authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Peer-derived addresses enter through backend snapshot events, are reduced to host strings, and become path input to a fixed HTTPS geolocation origin. Host extraction is not strict IP validation. Request and parsing failures become an unknown-country result; the external producer's address-validation and service-retention policies were not established.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Same-IP consumers share one pending network lookup, and completion removes that pending entry. Country attribution checks notifier liveness before mutation; peer-visualization completion additionally checks arc identity. The process-lifetime completed-IP cache predates this PR and remains a memory-retention characteristic, not an established introduced vulnerability.

A pruned peer restarts both of its counters, so a decrease in either
direction now resets both. Lifetime totals are persisted with the backend
epoch and the counters already folded into them, so an app restarted
while the backend keeps relaying counts the bytes it missed instead of
dropping them into a fresh baseline. Peer counters are deliberately not
persisted, so per-country totals still baseline on restart.

Bytes from a baseline, restored, or new-epoch peer reach a country with
people 0, which rendered "0 people" against a string whose translator
note says the count is greater than one.

For an uncached IP arriving after the baseline, _applyUnboundedSnapshot starts _resolveAndEmit before this stats lookup. Both call peerLookup, whose cache is populated only after the HTTP request finishes (geo_lookup_service.dart:234–269), so the same peer triggers duplicate requests. Further byte deltas can start more requests while the lookup is pending. Share an in-flight lookup per IP between the arc and stats paths, and test overlapping calls with a delayed response.
Snapshots were dropped wholesale while in SmC, so bytes Unbounded flushed
after stopping were missed if SmC started before the next poll. SmC now
folds those counters into relay stats and saves them, without touching
SmC's own state.
peerLookup cached only after the HTTP request returned, so the arc and
relay-stats paths requested the same new peer twice. Concurrent lookups
for one IP now share one request.

lib/features/action_mode/provider/share_notifier.dart:634, Concurrent paths issue duplicate peer lookups for uncached IPs: Fixed in e70b95e. GeoLookupService.peerLookup now keeps a per-IP map of in-flight lookups. While a request is pending, later callers for the same IP get the same Future, and the entry is removed once the request completes. That covers both the arc path (_resolveAndEmit) and the relay-stats path (_attributeToCountry), as well as repeated byte deltas while a lookup is pending. Added test/core/services/geo_lookup_service_test.dart: two overlapping lookups against a delayed mock response make one request, and a later call is served from the cache.
