Report Unbounded volunteer relayed bytes in the snapshot - #682
Conversation
Bump broflake to the pre-merge pseudo-version of getlantern/unbounded@6a1d801 (feat/advanced-volunteer-stats), which adds OnDownstreamChunkFunc/OnUpstreamChunkFunc. Re-bump once unbounded#462 merges. The snapshot gains bytesDown/bytesUp (cumulative since epoch) and peerBytes, per-IP down/up totals for current consumers plus those that left within the last 60s so the 1s poller sees final counts. Fields are additive so older app versions are unaffected. Chunk callbacks only add to per-slot atomics in a per-run table; bytes are attributed to the slot's IP under the manager mutex when the slot's connection changes or a snapshot is built, keeping the downstream data path off the global lock. broflake batches upstream bytes for up to 250ms and reports a consumer's close without flushing that batch, so credit bytes on a vacant slot to its last occupant until the next accept. Stopping now waits for chunk callbacks already past the cancellation check before the final fold, so their bytes are not lost in the detached table. Keep the slot table open until ui.Stop returns and do the final fold there, rather than dropping chunk callbacks as soon as the worker's context is cancelled. broflake delivers its batched upstream bytes during teardown (getlantern/unbounded#462), and those belong to the stopping run. broflake's ui.Stop returns before its workers finish tearing down, so byte callbacks can arrive after any point radiance can observe. Keep the stopped run's slot table and final slot owners for peerRetention, folding it on each snapshot, so late bytes are counted and credited to the consumers that relayed them rather than dropped or given to the next run. Pruning now drains live and retired slot tables first and runs before a connection acquires its tally, so a returning IP's fresh entry never inherits bytes from its pruned lifetime. Connection changes and stops also expire retired runs, so they don't accumulate without polling. A late chunk folded after its IP's tally was pruned and recreated would otherwise land in the returning IP's fresh lifetime. Holding the tally pointer sends it to the detached old tally, so it counts only toward the totals. Picks up delivery of a slot's pending upstream bytes before its connection change and on handler cancellation. Still a pre-merge pseudo-version; re-bump after #462 merges. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_019DnqgLJf7p4sK87dDvktjx

🟡 Changes recommended
Delayed downstream callbacks can attribute a previous peer’s bytes to its replacement after slot reuse.

What changed in this PR
Adds volunteer relay byte statistics to Unbounded snapshots for the app’s Action Mode display.
Changes:
- Exposes cumulative totals and retained per-IP byte counts.
- Tracks late teardown bytes separately across worker runs.
- Updates broflake and adds accounting, lifecycle, concurrency, and JSON tests.

Owner confirmed the redesign from the Codex gate's round-3 step back: a stopped run's slot table and its final owners are kept for 60s, so bytes broflake delivers during async teardown are still counted. The only remaining item before merge is re-bumping broflake to unbounded#462's merge commit. 🤖 Review generated with Claude Code |
Replaces the pre-merge pseudo-version (ea0cd1e) with the merge commit c6268bf on unbounded main, which carries the OnDownstreamChunkFunc / OnUpstreamChunkFunc callbacks this PR depends on. What
Adds byte counts to the Unbounded snapshot the Lantern app polls every second, so Action Mode can show volunteers how much data they relay. This change is additive JSON only, and older app versions ignore the new fields.
bytesDown/bytesUpepoch. They follow the same epoch rules asarrivalsand survive stop/start.peerBytes[{ip, down, up}]per IP sinceepoch, sorted by IP. Includes IPs connected now plus IPs whose last slot closed within 60s, so a 1s poller sees their final bytes. If a pruned IP returns it restarts at 0, so readers treat a decrease as a reset. One behavior note for consumers (getlantern/lantern#9166): bytes broflake delivers during its asynchronous teardown are still counted, so
bytesDown/bytesUpand an ended IP'speerBytesentry can grow slightly for a moment afterrunningturns false. Field names and semantics are otherwise unchanged. How
Hot path

start()gets a fresh slot table.stopCtxfolds what's left, ends every peer (which starts their 60s windows), and retires the run's table along with its final slot owners. broflake'sui.Stopreturns before its workers finish, so bytes can still arrive. A retired table keeps absorbing them, credited to the run's own consumers and never to the next run, for 60s. After that it is closed and given a final fold. Closing waits for adds already in progress.Dependency

Risk
unbounded/snapshot.go, because it runs on broflake's data path. A deadlock or slow path there would throttle relayed traffic for every volunteer. The callback takes only aRWMutexread lock and does an atomic add. The only writer isclose, which runs once per run, 60s after stop. How to revert
Revert the merge commit. The snapshot fields disappear, and older consumers already handle payloads without them. The broflake bump is reverted together with the code; nothing else depends on it.
