Why

lantern-cloud verifies a residential peer by fetching https://api.<PublicDomain>/v1/peer/verify-callback through it (cmd/api/peer_verify.go in lantern-cloud). This happens at registration and again whenever the reaper re-verifies. Every fetch reached radiance as an ordinary peer connection, with three effects:

I saw this on a live peer today. The first connection after serving came from 35.233.177.182, a lantern-cloud API IP, and was headed to api.iantem.io:443.

What changes

In the peerconn listener, isVerifierConn matches accepts whose destination host is api.iantem.io or api.staging.iantem.io. Those are dropped before trackConn and before the ConnectionEvent is emitted. A close carries no destination, so hidden accepts are counted per ip:port source under connsMu, and each one hides one later close from that source. It's a count rather than a set because samizdat multiplexes streams over one TCP connection, so several streams can share a source. The set is cleared in resetConnTracking and respects listenerDraining, the same way connsByIP does. Rejection tallying runs before the check, so nothing changes there.

Trade-off

The match is by destination host, so any connection through the peer to api.iantem.io is hidden, not only the verifier's. Lantern clients mostly reach the API through df.iantem.io. The main other traffic to api.iantem.io is a client's bandit callback probe through the proxy it was assigned. Hiding that one connection seems right: a probe isn't help yet, and the client's real traffic still counts on its own connections.

The host list duplicates lantern-cloud's "api." + PublicDomain. A comment points to the source, so a domain change is easy to trace.

Testing

  • TestIsVerifierConn_PairsCloseWithAccept checks that accepts are matched by host (case-insensitive), closes are paired by source, a duplicate close is not swallowed, and a reset forgets the set.
  • TestClient_HidesVerifierConnections starts a client and drives real peerconn.Notify events. Only the ordinary connection's accept and close are emitted, and ActiveClients is 1.
  • go test ./peer/ -race passes.

Pre-PR review (local Codex gate)

  • Rounds: 2 — final: CODEX GATE: verdict=approve critical=0 important=0 minor=0 reviewed=12
  • Exit: approve
  • Fixed: peer/peer.go:856 — verifierConns was a set keyed by ip:port, but multiplexed samizdat streams share a source. Two api.iantem.io streams on one connection hid only one close, and the other then decremented the client's ordinary count, so the heartbeat could under-report load. Now a per-source count, with TestClient_VerifierStreamsSharingASource (fails on the old code).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Verifier connections are no longer included in active-client counts or connection events, keeping connection activity focused on ordinary connections.
    • Rejected verifier connection attempts continue to be included in rejection counts.
    • Verifier connection records are cleared when tracking is reset.

lantern-cloud verifies a peer by fetching https://api.<domain>/v1/peer/
verify-callback through it, at registration and again from the reaper. Each
fetch arrived as a peer connection, so the client counted lantern-cloud as a
person helped (and now as a United States row in Advanced stats), and the
heartbeat reported it as an active client toward the per-peer cap.

Accepts bound for the callback hosts are now dropped before trackConn and
the ConnectionEvent. Their closes carry no destination, so the accept's
source is remembered under connsMu and its close is dropped by source.

📝 Walkthrough

The client now recognizes verifier connections by destination host and records their sources for close-event matching. It excludes recognized verifier events from connection tracking and event emission while recording rejection tallies before filtering.

Changes: Verifier connection filtering

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dd1ae

A verifier close can occasionally appear in connection events during shutdown. The impact is limited, but the lifecycle race should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to dd1ae

Concurrent connections can be misclassified, causing real traffic to disappear from reported load. This could undermine capacity decisions. Authentication and routing restrictions remain in place, but the server-side enforcement impact is not confirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new verifier set uses a TLS remote address as though it uniquely identified a proxied stream. Multiple HTTP/2 streams share that address. An authenticated client can keep ordinary traffic open, open two overlapping streams to a verifier hostname, and close those two streams. Their accepts collapse into one marker; the second close then decrements ordinary accounting, potentially reporting zero active clients while ordinary traffic remains open. This weakens the integrity of load reporting used for capacity decisions.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The attack requires authenticated access to a peer's Samizdat proxy, not merely unauthenticated network reachability. Its demonstrated scope is that peer's accounting and event stream, including counters for other connections sharing the attacker's remote IP. Incorrect load is reported to the server; downstream admission or assignment effects remain unverified.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — With one ordinary stream open, two overlapping verifier-host streams on the same TLS connection create only one verifier marker. Closing the first consumes that marker; closing the second reaches trackConn and removes the ordinary stream's IP entry. The remaining ordinary stream is then absent from reported load. The base counts all three accepts and closes, so this imbalance is introduced by the new suppression.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The filter changes reporting, not proxy authorization or routing. The inbound still invokes the router after notifying the listener, and rejected destinations remain tallied before suppression. These controls limit the concern to accounting and visibility rather than establishing access to otherwise forbidden destinations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The added tests verify single-marker consumption, reset cleanup and ordinary/verifier isolation with different full source addresses. They do not exercise the shared-source multiplexing sequence that breaks accounting; mutex protection and reset cleanup do not resolve that identity mismatch.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry a unique stream identifier and stable classification through both lifecycle events instead of correlating by remote address. Treat destination-based UI suppression separately from load-accounting exemptions unless verifier identity is established. A source counter alone would still leave mixed ordinary/verifier closes ambiguous.

samizdat multiplexes streams over one TCP conn, so several streams share a
source. A set let a second api.iantem.io stream's close through, which then
decremented the client's ordinary count.

* Action Mode: show relayed data for direct sharing

Advanced stats showed speed, session data and per-country bytes only for
Unbounded; direct sharing (SmC) got a note saying data was unavailable.
radiance now serves a direct-sharing relay snapshot at /peer/snapshot in
the shape of Unbounded's, so lantern-core polls it every second as
peer-snapshot and the share notifier folds it with the same relay code.

Each snapshot source gets its own counter tracker and sample clock: both
arrive every second with separate epochs, and a shared tracker would treat
every alternation as a restart. Peer snapshots are folded in every mode, so
bytes a session relays as it stops still count, but drive the speed only
while SmC is active, and an idle Unbounded snapshot no longer zeroes SmC's
speed. People still come from peer-connection events, so the snapshot's
arrivals are not counted again.

Bumps radiance to the snapshot commit (getlantern/radiance#689), with
lantern-box and sing-box-minimal to match.

* Action Mode: persist the direct-sharing relay watermark

Without it, a restarted app's first SmC snapshot only set a baseline, so
bytes relayed while the app was closed never reached the all-time total.
The peer feed now saves and restores its own epoch and counters alongside
Unbounded's.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01LQG2dRhaocR2UY5RPamm39

* Action Mode: zero SmC speed on outage, keep the save throttle

When the backend is unreachable peer snapshots stop, but only Unbounded's
outage reset the speed, so direct sharing kept showing its last figure.
And the SmC branch of the Unbounded snapshot forced a save every second,
which with SmC snapshots now marking the stats dirty bypassed the 30s
throttle; it now forces only when Unbounded's counters moved.
