I’m Ryan Swaney (he/him), a Senior Design Engineer from the Midwest who now calls Brooklyn home. I got my start coding in the early era of the web, building websites about my love for tabletop games. Since 2004, I have had the privilege to work with clients across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.
As a developer, I have a deep love for the front-of-the-front-end. My expertise is anchored in foundations of the web—HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—and how best to utilize them to craft digital experiences that are functional, visually appealing, performant, and accessible. As a designer, I am at my best when engaging in system-based work, whether removing friction from a visitor’s journey or operationalizing the design and editorial process.
Working as both a developer and designer has given me a deep sense of empathy for the challenges facing both disciplines. It allows me to act as a translator and advocate, ensuring that creative work is technically sound and that what gets built focuses on the people who use it.
