Problem

UIKit can keep two iPad columns visible in narrower windows where the JavaScript layout switches to a single-column model. That leaves the detail empty and makes the sidebar safe area look inconsistent.

Change

Native workspace layouts follow UIKit's horizontal size class down to the combined 600-point column minimum. Generic layouts keep their existing breakpoints. The iPad sidebar surface extends under the status area without an extra system background or duplicate top inset.

The bottom-left navigation comes from layer 1: single-column layouts reserve a Compose slot, while two-column iPad layouts use the detail pane’s New Task action. Its position and width remain stable across destination changes, including full-width Usage and Settings.

Stack and review order

Layer 2 of 3; depends on #23841. Merge #23841 first. Layer 3 (#24206, Duo native search) depends on this branch.

  • Logical base: feat/reorder-navigation-tabs (8e3ff73312).
  • Review only this layer.
  • This upstream PR targets main because GitHub cannot use its parent branch from the contributor fork as a base. Its default diff is cumulative until layer 1 merges. Rebase onto main after that merge; do not merge out of order.

Mobile only. No web/desktop navigation or search redesign.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: passed, including affected typechecks and focused tests.
  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/lib/layout.test.ts: 11 passed, covering a 715-point regular-width window, the 600/599-point boundary, and compact size class collapse.
  • Native iPad floating-window resize through wide, narrow regular, compact, and expanded states, with matched before/after screenshots and continuous recordings.
  • Native iPad portrait and landscape captures in T3 Light, Ocean Dark, and Grove Dark; measured matching message-composer/navigation geometry in both orientations.

Current integrated iPad resize recording shows Compose beside the single-column tabs and the full-width tab bar in two columns. Native tab-switch recording verifies stable geometry across all four destinations. The comparisons below isolate this layer’s original column fix.

Current wide single-column layout

Earlier integrated capture (3af154d1ca): wide single-column window with Compose matching the navigation pill height and staying beside its edge. The historical comparisons below retain their original revisions.

Before / after

Captured on the iPadOS 27 simulator using Demo Workstation fixtures and T3 Light. The before revision is layer 1 (e4f974ee55); the after revision adds only this iPad layer (9e7323f22e). Both captures use the same floating window, orientation, theme, and list state.

At 681 points wide, UIKit still shows two columns. Before, JavaScript treats the workspace as compact and leaves the detail column blank. After, the detail content and sidebar navigation remain available. Below the column minimum, the workspace collapses to one column and expands again when resized wider.

The full-screen captures below additionally cover portrait, landscape, and three themes.

Current rebase validation

Rebased onto main at ff1f6fd884, including Julius’s UIKit-managed list insets (#24284) and fixed Duo Home/PR headers (#24295). Those four list implementations remain identical to main. Focused checks pass; the integrated native rerun is in progress. Earlier screenshots and recordings below retain their original capture revisions.

Walkthrough

The mobile workspace now supports configurable navigation-tab order and visibility, including Usage and Settings destinations. Android and iOS controls render configured tabs. Settings adds tab customization, and workspace screens and layouts adapt to tab selection and device state.

Changes: Mobile workspace navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tab preferences and customization
apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/navigation-tab-order.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/navigation-tabs.ts, apps/mobile/src/persistence/mobile-preferences.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsNavigationRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/Stack.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/SettingsEnvironmentFilterHeader.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/settings-sheet-targets.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/storage.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/navigation-tab-order.test.ts, docs/user/usage.md
Tab order and visibility preferences are normalized and persisted. Settings adds controls to reorder, hide, show, and reset tabs, and lists overflow tabs. The settings stack registers the Navigation tabs screen.
Shared tab state and adaptive layout
apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/workspace-tabs-state.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceTabsContext.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/useSelectWorkspaceTab.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/workspace-tabs-state.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-thread-navigation.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/layout/*, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/useSystemWorkspaceTabBar.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/useWorkspaceSurface.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/layout.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/layout.test.ts
Workspace state includes Usage and native slot mapping. Tab selection resolves against enabled tabs. Layout and split eligibility account for native workspace metrics, selected tabs, and device state.

Android and iOS controls use tab IDs and selection. They render configured tabs and expose Compose actions under the configured conditions.

Workspace screens route extra tabs to Usage and show an empty state when no tabs are enabled. Settings and workspace surfaces apply tab- and device-specific header, background, and scroll-inset behavior.

On an active iPad Thread detail page, New Task may not be visible; returning to the empty detail pane remains a workaround. This is a bounded navigation issue to accept or address before merging.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a large cross-platform mobile navigation and workspace-layout change that adds persisted tab customization, promotes Usage into default workspace navigation, and modifies native iOS/Android controls and iPad column behavior. The product-default changes and broad production blast radius require human review.

* feat(relay): deploy on-demand preview stages for labeled PRs

Labeled same-repo PRs deploy stage pr-<n> behind the relay-preview environment reviewer gate. Unlabel or close tears the stage down, and a nightly job retries failed teardowns. Runtime-created managed endpoint tunnels and CNAMEs are swept by a PreviewTunnelSweep resource.

Known gaps, tracked as follow-ups: an interrupted preview deploy can leave runtime tunnels behind; repo-level relay secrets still bypass the environment gate until moved.
