Run flow, packet, and metrics captures with in-cluster authentication, unique capture namespaces, validated CLI arguments and filters, and configurable retention cleanup. Serve capture downloads on localhost for authenticated Kubernetes port-forward access.

Include API definitions, generated CRDs and bundles, RBAC, Helm support, examples, controller tests, live integration coverage, and required vendored dependencies. Remove obsolete development artifacts and add ignore rules for local outputs.

.gitignore, Dockerfile, Makefile
Adds ignore rules for local artifacts, sets default Go build parallelism to 2, and pins controller-gen to v0.20.0.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to aecb9

One OnDemandCapture with an empty duration can stop processing for all captures. Smaller gaps also remain: spec edits after a capture enters Pending are not revalidated, malformed or sequences in arguments are accepted and can broaden a capture, and the packet example fails validation. The earlier image-pinning and tenant-credential concerns are resolved. Fix the duration validation before merging.

Inline comments:
In `@bundles/k8s/manifests/flows.netobserv.io_flowcollectors.yaml`:
- Line 5: Update the controller-gen version annotation in the FlowCollector
manifest to match the Makefile-pinned version, v0.20.0.

In `@config/manager/manager.yaml`:
- Around line 34-35: Pin the default CLI image to reviewed content and render it
consistently across installation paths. In config/manager/manager.yaml (lines
34–35), replace the mutable main tag with the reviewed digest; in
helm/values.yaml (lines 96–97), configure that digest and update the Helm
template to render the digest when set. Regenerate the bundle manifests so their
RELATED_IMAGE_NETOBSERV_CLI and relatedImages entries use the same digest.

In `@docs/e2e-test-consolidated.md`:
- Around line 31-32: Reconcile the step numbering and totals in the consolidated
end-to-end test document: make Phase 1’s listed procedures match its table
count, remove the numbering gap before Step 6, and align the overview total with
the final pass criteria. Update the relevant verification-step sections and
summary counts without adding procedures unless needed to match the documented
total.
- Around line 436-437: Update the networkpolicy checks in both locations to
verify that the returned list contains at least one policy, rather than relying
only on the `kubectl get networkpolicy` exit status; preserve the existing
behavior for non-empty lists.
- Around line 109-110: Update the port checks in the consolidated e2e
instructions, including RULES_DNS and the other affected checks, to inspect the
policy’s .spec.ingress or .spec.egress field according to the expected
direction; do not search the full policy YAML for a port occurrence.
- Line 689: Update the POLICY_YAML check in Step 44 to use a fixed-string or
structured YAML match that reliably detects an empty allow-all egress rule, and
set DENY_CHECK to 1 when one is found.

In `@docs/e2e-test-minimal.md`:
- Line 217: Remove the `bash ./e2e-minimal.sh` self-invocation from the test
blocks in the documentation, so copying them into `e2e-minimal.sh` does not
recursively rerun the script. Keep the run command as an instruction outside the
script contents.
- Line 65: Update the Test 4 check in the OP/PL selector flow to verify the
intended pod membership rather than comparing selector strings; account for
Kubernetes matchLabels AND semantics so the check reports “isolated” only when
the selected pod sets do not overlap.
- Around line 104-105: Update the YAML validation using the YAML variable to
inspect ingress and egress rule structure and reject empty rules as well as the
existing catch-all CIDRs, so the test cannot pass when an empty allow-all rule
is present.
- Line 135: Update the Test 9 no-operand-policies branch to check whether
operand mode is disabled before exiting successfully; when operand mode is
enabled and no policies exist, report the test as failed rather than skipped.
- Line 147: In Tests 10–12, replace the fixed five-second sleeps with polling
for each expected NetworkPolicy state, using a bounded timeout; preserve the
checks for policy recreation, zero policies, and two policies as applicable.

In `@docs/OnDemandCapture.md`:
- Line 309: Update the `kubectl` examples in `OnDemandCapture.md` to specify the
`netobserv` namespace for the watch command and other namespaced `get`,
`describe`, `delete`, and `port-forward` commands, matching the namespace used
when creating the CR.
- Around line 360-362: Remove the curl download command under “Download all
metrics” and direct readers to the Prometheus metrics destination instead,
consistent with the documented behavior that metrics are not available as a
downloadable file.
- Around line 40-44: Remove the `.spec.filters.namespaces` and
`.spec.filters.podLabelSelector` instructions from the OnDemandCapture
reference, or explicitly mark both filters as rejected by the Go CLI backend so
users do not follow them as supported configuration.
- Around line 324-330: Replace the pod-IP access commands in “Get pod IP from
status” with a Kubernetes port-forward to the actual launcher pod, forwarding
local port 8080 to the file server’s 127.0.0.1:8080 listener. Show users
accessing the results at localhost through the forwarded port, rather than using
the pod IP or status port as a direct address.

In `@internal/controller/ondemandcapture_controller.go`:
- Around line 224-246: Update ensureCaptureAccess and createCLIPod so the
ServiceAccount and CLI pod run in an operator-owned namespace unavailable to
tenants, and disable pod-level token automounting. If the CLI needs credentials,
provide a projected token volume mounted only into the cli container; otherwise
leave credentials unmounted.

Reachability: Internal
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-494 — Download of Code Without Integrity Check

Pin the default CLI image to reviewed content. Both new installation defaults use the mutable main tag. The operator passes this value directly to both containers in each OnDemandCapture pod, which mounts a service-account token and uses the capture CLI role. The capture pod also uses imagePullPolicy: Always, so a later registry update can change the code that runs with those permissions. Pin the image and update the Helm template to render the digest.

Reconcile the verification-step totals.

Phase 1 lists only Step 1, but the table counts five steps. The numbering then jumps to Step 6, and the overview says “65+” while the final criteria say 50. Add the missing steps or correct the counts so the pass criteria match the procedures.

Scope port checks to the expected policy direction.

These searches scan the full policy YAML, so a port under ingress can satisfy an egress check, or vice versa. For example, Step 11 checks port 8443 as ingress, but Step 42 counts any occurrence of 8443 as egress. Inspect .spec.ingress and .spec.egress separately. Set the namespace in the kubectl examples.

The examples create the CR in netobserv, but this watch command omits -n netobserv. If the reader’s current namespace differs, the command cannot find the CR. Add the namespace to the other namespaced get, describe, delete, and port-forward examples in this document too. Authorization Bypass

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Moderate
CWE: CWE-269 — Improper Privilege Management

Do not bind a tenant-reachable ServiceAccount to netobserv-ondemandcapture-cli.

ensureCaptureAccess creates the ServiceAccount in odc.Namespace, and createCLIPod runs there with AutomountServiceAccountToken: true. The bound ClusterRole grants cross-namespace secret and workload access, RBAC object creation and updates, and privileged SCC use. A user who can create an OnDemandCapture and create or exec into a pod in that namespace can read the mounted token and use these cluster-wide permissions.

Move the ServiceAccount and CLI pod to an operator-owned namespace that denies tenant access, or restrict OnDemandCapture creation to cluster administrators. Set pod-level token automounting to false for containers that do not need credentials, and use a projected token volume mounted only into the cli container; Kubernetes does not provide per-container automounting.

The duration pattern accepts an empty string, and that value breaks decoding for all OnDemandCaptures.

The pattern ^([0-9]+h)?([0-9]+m)?([0-9]+s)?$ matches "", so the API server stores duration: "". The Go type is *metav1.Duration. Its UnmarshalJSON calls time.ParseDuration(""), which fails. The controller cache then cannot decode the list. The informer for every OnDemandCapture stops syncing, and one bad CR stalls reconciliation for all captures.

Fix the source marker in api/ondemandcapture/v1beta1/ondemandcapture_types.go. Do not edit this generated file. Then run make update-bundle to regenerate bundles/k8s/manifests/netobserv.io_ondemandcaptures.yaml, bundles/openshift/manifests/netobserv.io_ondemandcaptures.yaml, and helm/crds/netobserv.io_ondemandcaptures.yaml.

Remove interfaces from the packet example.

The controller rejects packet captures with a nonempty spec.interfaces. Applying this example fails validation instead of starting a capture. Remove these lines; packetConfig.port already supplies a traffic filter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

For instance, you can create a `filters.json` file such as: ```json [ { "ip_cidr":"0.0.0.0/0", "action": "Accept" } ] ``` And set environment variables: ```bash export FLOW_FILTER_RULES=$(cat filters.json) ``` ### Mandatory parameter - `ip_cidr` - IP address and CIDR mask for the flow filter rule, supports IPv4 and IPv6 address format. If wanted to match against any IP, user can use `0.0.0.0/0` or `::/0` for IPv4 and IPv6 respectively. ### Optional parameters - `action` - Action to be taken for the flow filter rule. Possible values are `Accept` (default) and `Reject`. - For the matching rule with `Accept` action this flow will be allowed to be cached in eBPF table, with updated global metric `FilterAcceptCounter`. - For the matching rule with `Reject` action this flow will not be cached in eBPF table, with updated global metric `FilterRejectCounter`. - `direction` - Direction of the flow filter rule. Possible values are `Ingress` and `Egress`. - `protocol` - Protocol of the flow filter rule. Possible values are `TCP`, `UDP`, `SCTP`, `ICMP`, `ICMPv6`. - `source_port` - Single Source port of the flow filter rule. - `source_port_range` - Source port range of the flow filter rule. using "80-100" format. - `source_ports` - Source port two values of the flow filter rule. using "80,100" format. - `destination_port` - Single Destination port of the flow filter rule. - `destination_port_range` - Destination port range of the flow filter rule. using "80-100" format. - `destination_ports` - Destination port two values of the flow filter rule. using "80,100" format. - `port` - Single L4 port of the flow filter rule can be either source or destination port. - `port_range` - L4 port range of the flow filter rule. using "80–100" format can be either a source or destination ports range. - `ports` - Two ports values of the flow filter rule. using "80,100" format can be either two ports for src or two ports for destination. - `icmp_type` - ICMP type of the flow filter rule. - `icmp_code` - ICMP code of the flow filter rule. - `peer_ip` - Specific Peer IP address of the flow filter rule. Do not use with `peer_cidr` (this parameters is internally translated into a `peer_cidr`). - `peer_cidr` - Specific Peer IP CIDR of the flow filter rule. - `tcp_flags` - Filter based on TCP flags Possible values are SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK, FIN, RST, PSH, URG, ECE, CWR, FIN-ACK, RST_ACK - `drops` - Filter flows when packets drop feature is enabled to filter only flows with drop cause not 0. Note: - for L4 ports configuration, you can use either single port config options or the range but not both. - use either specific src and/or dst ports or the generic port config that works for both directions. - you cannot have two rules with the same combination of `ip_cidr` and `peer_cidr`/`peer_ip`. ## How does Flow Filtering work ### Filter and CIDR Matching The flow filter examines incoming or outgoing packets and attempts to match the source IP address or the destination IP address of each packet against a CIDR range specified in the `ip_cidr` parameter. If the packet&`#39`;s source or destination IP address falls within the specified CIDR range, the filter takes action based on the configured rules. This action could involve allowing the packet to be cached in an eBPF flow table or blocking it. If an IP matches several rules, **only the one with the longest CIDR prefix is evaluated**. For instance, having a first rule on `10.0.10.0/24` and a second rule on `10.0.0.0/8`, a …[truncated] <title>examples/packetcapture-dump/README.md at main · netobserv/netobserv-ebpf-agent</title> https://github.com/netobserv/netobserv-ebpf-agent/blob/main/examples/packetcapture-dump/README.md # File: netobserv/netobserv-ebpf-agent/examples/packetcapture-dump/README.md - Repository: netobserv/netobserv-ebpf-agent | Network Observability eBPF Agent | 200 stars | C - Branch: main ```md # Packet Capture TCP Client ## How to run From the root directory of the project: Build the agent (the flowlogs client that uses ebpf) using: ```bash make build ``` Build the packetcapture-dump-collector (the client that receives full packets from the agent and writes to a pcap file) using: ```bash go build -mod vendor -o bin/packetcapture-client examples/packetcapture-dump/client/packetcapture-client.go ``` Start the packetcapture-client using: (in a secondary shell) ```bash ./bin/packetcapture-client -outfile=capture.pcap ``` Start the agent using: ```bash sudo TARGET_HOST=localhost TARGET_PORT=9990 ENABLE_PCA="true" FLOW_FILTER_RULES=&`#39`;[{"ip_cidr":"0.0.0.0/0","protocol":"TCP","action":"Accept"}]&`#39`; ./bin/netobserv-ebpf-agent ``` You should see output such as: ```bash Starting Packet Capture Client. Reject empty or groups in args.

validateCaptureArgs treats or as a no-op. Trailing, leading, and consecutive or tokens therefore pass validation. A filter such as --port=443 still sets hasFilter, so the packet-capture filter requirement passes. The malformed sequence is then passed to the CLI and may broaden the capture.

Track filters per group. Include packet and structured filters that buildCLIArgs emits before Spec.Args, so a leading or remains valid only when a preceding filter exists.

Validate the spec again before createCLIPod builds argv.

validateSpec runs only in phase "". The Pending phase builds the pod from the current spec through buildCLIArgs. IgnoreStatusChange does not filter spec edits. A spec edit after the status moves to Pending is therefore never validated. This window includes the one-second requeue and any backoff retries after an ensureCaptureAccess or createCLIPod error. An edited args value such as --namespace=kube-system or --output-dir=/tmp is appended after the managed flags and overrides them. The CLI then works in a namespace that handleDeletion never cleans up. Output also no longer goes to the served /output volume.

I'm not sure it's super interesting to capture flows / metrics as the operator already do that.

However, since we can put filters on both, and those can be different, let's keep it as is for the PoC and discuss with the team about it.

// +kubebuilder:validation:Type=string
// +kubebuilder:validation:Pattern="^([0-9]+h)?([0-9]+m)?([0-9]+s)?$"
// duration is how long to capture (e.g. "5m", "1h30m")

It should be maxTime for consistency with the CLI args and with maxBytes

Can't we import []AgentFeature from FlowCollector API here ?

That doesn't looks related to that PR ?

That should be the same eBPF agent image than the operator one

Why do we need that if we go in the way of refactoring the CLI with golang ?

The CLI args to filters should be handled in the CLI repo only.
From operator repo, we should only manipulate []EBPFFlowFilterRule and []FLPFilterSet imported from FlowCollector and reused in OnDemandCapture

Instead of relying on RequeueAfter we should improve the design:

  • Keep the CR and owned-Pod watches.
  • Make running reconciliation event-driven:
    • Update status only when Pod IP, start time, phase, or error actually changes.
    • Return no periodic requeue while the Pod is healthy.
    • Let Pod status events detect completion/failure.
  • Keep a low-frequency safety resync, such as 1–5 minutes, rather than every 5 seconds. This protects against missed/stale events without constant status writes.
  • For TTL:
    • On completion, calculate the expiration deadline.
    • Use RequeueAfter for normal cleanup.
    • Also enqueue all terminal captures during controller startup or through a periodic scan, so cleanup survives operator restarts.
    • Alternatively, add a dedicated cleanup controller/queue keyed by expiration time.

We can keep the pod approach for now but we'll need to conside job instead when we'll figure out how to store the output outside of the collector pod.

A Kubernetes Job would provide useful semantics for the CLI container:

  • explicit completion/failure state;
  • retry policy via backoffLimit;
  • optional activeDeadlineSeconds;
  • native ttlSecondsAfterFinished;
  • clearer distinction between “capture execution” and “file serving”.
