feat(search): heap-based block-max WAND as the default top-k early-termination iterator - #3535
Replace the sort-based BlockMaxWandIterator with a heap-based implementation
(HeapBlockMaxWandIterator) and make it the default early-termination path for
full-text top-k queries (kAuto). The previous implementation re-sorted all
sub-iterators on every pivot round and, after its lazy/partial-sort rewrite,
could return wrong documents; the new one keeps only a doc-ordered min-heap plus
a small prefix_ buffer, so no implicit "the whole array is ordered" invariant
is required.
What changed
New iterator: HeapBlockMaxWandIterator
Doc-ordered min-heap over the live sub-iterators. Each round pops only the
prefix whose global-upper-bound sum exceeds the threshold (plus all clauses
tied on the pivot doc), then pushes it back — no per-round full sort.
SkipUncompetitiveRange(): block-level skip on the rejection path. Phase 1
only repositions block cursors (NextShallow); phase 2 repeatedly moves the
clause with the smallest block end while Σ block_max(prefix) <= threshold proves the range non-competitive; phase 3
restores doc_id_ with a single Next() so the prefix can safely go back to
the heap.
New stats (BlockMaxWandStats): iterations_, docs_scored_, child_advances_, block_seeks_, heap_ops_, retired_children_ — used by
the integration tests to assert that pruning actually happens.
Fixes two correctness hazards inherited from the sort-based version:
never call NextShallow() on a child already positioned on the candidate
doc (it moves the block cursor without updating doc_id_, so Score()
would read tf=0 or a stale cached score);
a child whose block was skipped past the candidate must contribute 0, not
the upper bound of the block it landed in.
Iterator interface
BlockMaxLeafIterator::NextNoSkip() (default: forwards to Next()), implemented
by TermDocIterator as pure seek (no per-doc threshold skipping, so no tf /
column-length decoding per candidate).
AdvanceMode (kThresholdSkip | kPlainSeek) exposed for A/B diagnosis of
leaf-side skipping vs. WAND-side pruning.
kAuto now selects kHeapBMW (was kBMW); the sort-based variant stays as kBMW for A/B only.
physical_match_impl: both iterator-creation switches accept kHeapBMW; the kCompare three-way diff now uses the heap variant as its BMW leg.
Planner: block_max=heap_bmw|heap option.
Tests
QueryMatchTest.bmw_many_terms: 200-term query over 4 segments, asserts the
heap variant is actually selected.
QueryMatchTest.bmw_heap_differential: naive OR vs. heap BMW, same index and
query, compared doc-by-doc on RowID and score (full scan without
threshold), plus top-k score parity with threshold feedback. Switching the
wiring back to the sort-based iterator makes this test fail deterministically.
BmwLongQueryTest (new file, opt-in scale via env): full-scan parity with
naive, top-k vs. exhaustive top-k (topn=1/10/100) with determinism, dense
corpus baseline, stability (Next(RowID) jumps, early give-up, MSM=2, phrase
mix, 4 threads x 5 rounds), and a perf comparison (INFINITY_BMW_IT_PERF=1,
optional naive oracle via INFINITY_BMW_IT_PERF_VERIFY=1).
Performance (naive full scan = 1.0x)

This PR removed the only test assertion that explicit EarlyTermAlgo::kBMW builds a kBMWIterator. The kBMW case still dispatches to BlockMaxWandIterator, and the PR keeps this path for A/B comparison. No test under src/unit_test now references kBMW or kBMWIterator. A change that sends explicit kBMW to HeapBlockMaxWandIterator can therefore pass the suite. Both iterators return the same results, so result-parity checks would not detect the change. An A/B comparison that uses kBMW could then run the heap iterator instead.
Add a separate explicit kBMW context with a type assertion:

Assert the default kAuto dispatch with a positive topn.
bmw_heap_differential runs only kNaive and kHeapBMW. No test in query_match_ut.cpp sets kAuto. With a non-zero topn, kAuto resolves to kHeapBMW at query_node_impl.cpp:629-633, so this is the default heap BMW path. A change that routes kAuto to kBMW or kNaive would not change the document or score parity checks, so no current assertion would detect it. The iterator type is the only signal that distinguishes the dispatch. Add a kAuto case with topn set to bmw_many_terms, which already asserts kHeapBMWIterator.

Check top-k document identities, not only scores, in the differential test.
The top-k loop at lines 311-314 compares only scores with ASSERT_NEAR. A heap BMW result can return a different document at a rank when its score falls within the tolerance of the naive score, and the test still passes. The full-scan loop above compares document IDs with ASSERT_EQ, so this gap affects only the top-k path.
Add an identity check for documents that lie clearly above the cutoff. Use boundary = naive_top.back().second and boundary_tolerance = 1e-4F * std::max(1.0F, std::abs(boundary)). Skip documents within boundary_tolerance of the cutoff. Their order can change between paths.
For each path, require every document with a score above boundary + boundary_tolerance to appear in the other path's top-k row IDs. Test membership in each direction. Do not require the two sets to be equal. A document can sit above the cutoff on one path and just below it on the other.

Add heap to the block_max error message.
The parser accepts heap as an alias for heap_bmw, but the error text lists only heap_bmw. A user who sees the error gets an incomplete list of accepted values. The same omission appears in the filter pushdown path at src/planner/optimizer/index_scan/filter_expression_push_down_indexscanfilter_impl.cpp:876.

The break at line 269 exits only the word-scanning while loop for the current row. The for loop over batch then continues, so words from later rows still reach vocab. LoadVocabulary can return more than max_terms words. Add the limit to the scanning loop condition so that later rows add no words.

Map naive to false before forwarding block_max.
With --algo naive, the benchmark sets block_max=naive. The planner accepts only false for EarlyTermAlgo::kNaive. Any other value reaches the else branch, which throws, so the query fails before the naive search runs.

Skip timing output for failed searches.
The benchmark ignores the status returned by infinity->Search(...) and logs a timing sample for every iteration. Inputs such as --topn 0 or an unsupported algorithm can return an error status, so check the returned QueryResult and log timing only for successful searches.

Treat an explicit --repeat 0 as an error or as zero rounds.
In query mode with --terms greater than zero, BenchmarkMoreQuery clamps the round count to at least one. An explicit --repeat 0 therefore runs one long query. The run log then reports one round. The --repeat help text describes the option as "how many long queries to run", and zero is not documented as meaning one. Reject a zero value during parsing, or compute rounds directly from opts.repeat_ so that zero runs no rounds.

Reject --topn values outside the MATCH top-N range.
When --topn exceeds i32's range, the benchmark writes it into MATCH text, where the binder narrows it to i32 without range validation. PhysicalMatch then uses the narrowed value as the result limit. Reject values above i32::max() before building the query.

Load at least the requested vocabulary size.
When --terms exceeds 20,000, LoadVocabulary can stop at the fixed cap before collecting the requested number of eligible words. The benchmark then rejects the request, even when the corpus contains enough words. The inner token loop may overshoot the cap, so this does not reject every value above 20,000.
Preserve the existing 20,000-word pool for smaller requests while allowing larger requests to load enough terms.

Restore the heap advance mode in TearDown.
SetAdvanceMode updates process-wide state. If LongQueryAtScale exits after selecting kPlainSeek, later tests can inherit that mode because TearDown does not reset it. Their heap iterators then call NextNoSkip(target) instead of Next(target), making parity and pruning checks depend on test order.

Use a tolerance appropriate for float-score accumulation.
The naive and heap iterators sum matching child scores in different orders. Both produce float document scores, but the test compares their aggregate double sums with a 1e-9 relative tolerance. On a large hit set, valid rounding differences can exceed this threshold while each document remains within the existing 1e-4 tolerance. Use a looser aggregate tolerance or a numerically stable error bound.

Align the top-N comment with the assertion.
The comment at line 771 states that a larger topn can only need more candidates. The assertion at lines 772-773 checks only that the top-100 run reports at least one pivot round. The test never compares the top-100 count with the top-10 or top-1 count, so a top-100 count below the top-10 count still passes. The code does not establish that pivot-round counts are monotonic in topn. Add a cross-run assertion only after that property is confirmed. Until then, the comment should describe the check that runs.

Check randomized top-k against a reference that receives no threshold feedback.
Check randomized top-k against a reference that receives no threshold feedback.
Step (3) compares kNaive and algo top-k runs. Run calls UpdateScoreThreshold for both runs, so both pass through the shared threshold path. A defect in that shared path can change both result lists in the same way, and this check still passes.
CompareFullScan already builds parity.top_ from a full naive scan that receives no threshold feedback. The randomized test computes it but never reads it. Pass max(topn, 10) as the capacity, then compare the heap top-k scores against the first topn entries of parity.top_.

Gate the heap-iterator assertions on postings, not query term count.
MakeQuery can keep two distinct terms where only one has postings. The other term's Lookup returns null, and OrQueryNode::CreateSearch drops it. The remaining TermDocIterator leaves has_stats_ false, so the assertion at lines 744, 907, and 1031 fails. Assert the heap iterator only when two queried terms have postings.

Make the top-N iteration bound conditional on corpus size.
The assertion at bmw_long_query_ut.cpp:760 requires iterations_ < total_docs for every topn. That bound fails for a corpus no larger than topn in which every document matches. The heap threshold stays at zero until the heap holds topn hits, so every document is visited. Guard the bound with a corpus-size condition, as the nearby size checks at lines 764–766 already do, or drop it for small corpora.

Allow zero-hit rounds in the randomized differential test.
The randomized test asserts that every materialized round has at least one reference hit. A query with minimum-should-match 3 and few terms can match no document, and the naive and heap iterators then agree on zero hits. The assertion fails in that case, although parity holds. Skip the jump probe when the reference is empty. The lockstep parity check above it still covers zero-hit rounds.

Quote multi-token phrases in the mixed phrase/term block.
Each quoted expression in this loop holds one word. A single quoted word parses to a term node, so the query builds no phrase children, and the block does not exercise phrase handling under heap BMW even though its comment says it does. The corpus draws each word independently, so a given two-word sequence is rarely present in the indexed documents. The phrases still build phrase children, and the naive and heap results are still compared for parity.

Compare concurrent top-10 results against a serial naive oracle.
The concurrent stability block checks only the result count. A worker run that returns ten entries with wrong documents or scores still passes. The block comment states completeness as its intent, so the existing assertion matches that intent. The gap is that result content is not checked under concurrent execution.
The oracle can be computed on the main thread before the workers start. Existing top-k checks in the same file already use EarlyTermAlgo::kNaive with a top-k value as their reference. The workers are joined before the enclosing scope exits, so capturing the oracle by reference is safe.

Check randomized heap top-k against an exhaustive reference.
Step (3) compares the heap top-k run with a naive top-k run. Both runs use the same threshold-driven leaf skipping in the default mode, so a defect in that path produces matching wrong results and this check still passes. The exhaustive reference already exists in the materialized block, but it is out of scope at step (3). Compare the heap top-k with the exhaustive scores inside that block. Non-materialized mode has no per-document scores, so this check runs only when materialize is set.

Treat NaN scores as mismatches in CompareFullScan.
The check std::abs(score_a - score_b) > tolerance evaluates to false when either score is NaN, so a NaN-versus-finite pair counts as a match. Side-A scores are summed but never asserted. Side-A top-N entries are checked only for the top 10. A NaN score outside those checks passes the test.

Score-only top-k checks accept a wrong RowID at equal scores.
The checks at lines 709-712 and 738 compare each returned document's score with the reference score at the same rank. A returned RowID that has the same score as the reference entry passes, even when the reference order places a different RowID at that rank. The reference order breaks score ties by ascending RowID (lines 682-688). A tie-order regression in the heap path can therefore pass this block. The ID diagnostics at lines 721-724 run only after a score mismatch and do not fail the test.

Compare seek-mode full-scan hits per document.
The seek-mode step checks only the hit count and the score sum. A plain-seek result that returns different documents, or moves scores between documents, still passes when those two aggregates match. Compare the seek run against the naive reference per document, as the step-1 CompareFullScan call does, with the advance mode set to kPlainSeek.
Suggested approach
Replace the aggregate-only assertions in step 2 with a CompareFullScan call that uses EarlyTermAlgo::kNaive and EarlyTermAlgo::kHeapBMW. Set the advance mode to kPlainSeek first. Confirm that the naive path does not build HeapBlockMaxWandIterator before relying on this approach.

The > 0 threshold lets the test reach the concurrency check. That check still requires exactly 10 results from each kHeapBMW run with topn 10. @src/unit_test/storage/invertedindex/search/bmw_long_query_ut.cpp at line 1125:
Update the stability test around the reference result-count assertion and
concurrent kHeapBMW runs to support corpora with fewer than 10 matching
documents. Allow any nonempty reference result, compute the expected count as
the smaller of 10 and the reference hit count, capture it in each worker, and
compare each run against that count.

Summary
Replace the sort-based
BlockMaxWandIteratorwith a heap-based implementation(
HeapBlockMaxWandIterator) and make it the default early-termination path forfull-text top-k queries (
kAuto). The previous implementation re-sorted allsub-iterators on every pivot round and, after its lazy/partial-sort rewrite,
could return wrong documents; the new one keeps only a doc-ordered min-heap plus
a small
prefix_buffer, so no implicit "the whole array is ordered" invariantis required.
What changed
New iterator:
HeapBlockMaxWandIteratorprefix whose global-upper-bound sum exceeds the threshold (plus all clauses
tied on the pivot doc), then pushes it back — no per-round full sort.
SkipUncompetitiveRange(): block-level skip on the rejection path. Phase 1only repositions block cursors (
NextShallow); phase 2 repeatedly moves theclause with the smallest block end while
Σ block_max(prefix) <= thresholdproves the range non-competitive; phase 3restores
doc_id_with a singleNext()so the prefix can safely go back tothe heap.
BlockMaxWandStats):iterations_,docs_scored_,child_advances_,block_seeks_,heap_ops_,retired_children_— used bythe integration tests to assert that pruning actually happens.
NextShallow()on a child already positioned on the candidatedoc (it moves the block cursor without updating
doc_id_, soScore()would read tf=0 or a stale cached score);
the upper bound of the block it landed in.
Iterator interface
BlockMaxLeafIterator::NextNoSkip()(default: forwards toNext()), implementedby
TermDocIteratoras pure seek (no per-doc threshold skipping, so no tf /column-length decoding per candidate).
AdvanceMode(kThresholdSkip|kPlainSeek) exposed for A/B diagnosis ofleaf-side skipping vs. WAND-side pruning.
Wiring
EarlyTermAlgo::kHeapBMW+DocIteratorType::kHeapBMWIterator.kAutonow selectskHeapBMW(waskBMW); the sort-based variant stays askBMWfor A/B only.physical_match_impl: both iterator-creation switches acceptkHeapBMW; thekComparethree-way diff now uses the heap variant as its BMW leg.block_max=heap_bmw|heapoption.Tests
QueryMatchTest.bmw_many_terms: 200-term query over 4 segments, asserts theheap variant is actually selected.
QueryMatchTest.bmw_heap_differential: naive OR vs. heap BMW, same index andquery, compared doc-by-doc on RowID and score (full scan without
threshold), plus top-k score parity with threshold feedback. Switching the
wiring back to the sort-based iterator makes this test fail deterministically.
BmwLongQueryTest(new file, opt-in scale via env): full-scan parity withnaive, top-k vs. exhaustive top-k (topn=1/10/100) with determinism, dense
corpus baseline, stability (
Next(RowID)jumps, early give-up, MSM=2, phrasemix, 4 threads x 5 rounds), and a perf comparison (
INFINITY_BMW_IT_PERF=1,optional naive oracle via
INFINITY_BMW_IT_PERF_VERIFY=1).Performance (naive full scan = 1.0x)
1M docs (10 x 100k, vocab 20k, 40 words/doc):
200k docs (4 x 50k), topn=10: 100/200/400/800 terms = 4.20x / 5.20x / 6.77x / 8.10x.
The gain grows with the number of query terms; the sort-based variant is slower
than naive beyond ~100 terms (2.7x at 100, 12.5x at 800).
