Walkthrough
VirtualStore adds file syncing and updates file deletion status handling. WalManager records successfully synced checkpoint entries and uses that state to gate recycling of rotated WAL files. NewTxn invokes recycling after checkpoint metadata updates, and tests cover recycling and the sync requirement.

Summary
File sync and deletion results src/storage/io/virtual_store.cppm, src/storage/io/virtual_store_impl.cpp
VirtualStore adds SyncFile for existing files. DeleteFile returns an error status when removal reports an error and returns success when the file was already removed.
WalFile::Recycle deletes rotated WAL files with timestamps at or below the checkpoint timestamp. It logs deletion failures.

WalManager records a checkpoint timestamp after syncing the WAL file and recycles only when the requested timestamp matches. NewTxn calls recycling after checkpoint metadata updates. Tests check successful recycling and retention when the checkpoint entry has not been synced.
Resolve the WAL durability and error-handling issues before merging. Storage failures or power loss can leave recovery files unavailable, while recycling errors can interrupt checkpoint completion.

Publishing LastCheckpointTS after a failed checkpoint sync can let Cleanup delete database metadata that a later replay needs.
PostCommit calls SetLastCheckpointTS(current_ckp_ts_) even when the checkpoint's SyncFile fails. Cleanup() uses that value as its upper bound and deletes dropped-entity keys with drop_ts <= visible_ts. Those keys include the drop-database key and the database catalog entry.
If the checkpoint WAL entry is then lost, replay starts from the previous checkpoint and re-runs the drop-database command. ReplayDropDb finds no drop-database key, so it calls PrepareCommitDropDB. That function calls GetDBMeta to obtain db_key, and it cannot obtain that key once the catalog entry is deleted. Replay then returns an error. The retained wal.log.* files do not prevent this, because replay resolves the database from KV metadata rather than from the WAL.
The new RecycleWalFile gate keeps WAL files but does not change this path. Gate the SetLastCheckpointTS call on the checkpoint's sync result, so Cleanup does not use an unsynced checkpoint.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 6e4ce04b281f); the change keeps it reachable.

Correct the coverage comment: this test does not exercise the failed-fsync branch.
The test never runs the checkpoint write path, so it cannot reach the failed SyncFile branch. A regression that publishes last_synced_ckp_ts_ after a failed fsync would still pass. The comment states that the initial-state check covers that path. The check covers only the initial gate state.
🐛 Suggested comment fix
-// A failed fsync leaves exactly the state built below, so covering-// the initial state covers that path too.+// This test covers only the initial gate state. It does not fail the+// sync, so the failed-fsync branch is not exercised.
A test that makes the sync fail and asserts that the segment remains would cover that branch. Add one only if a supported failure path exists.

Check the status returned by DeleteFile in SwapWalFile.
On the duplicate-filename path, SwapWalFile ignores the status from VirtualStore::DeleteFile(wal_path_). If the removal fails, wal.log stays. The code then opens it in append mode, and startup replay reads its old entries. At base, the same failure aborted startup. Check the returned status and call UnrecoverableError on failure, as the base code did.

Guard the WAL directory listing in the checkpoint commit path.
The new recycle call runs inside NewTxn::PostCommit. If ListDirectory fails, its UnrecoverableException escapes the checkpoint commit. No handler catches it, so the background processor thread terminates. Catch the failure in WalManager::RecycleWalFile and log it. The rotated files stay in place for the next checkpoint.

Fsync the WAL directory before recycling rotated files.
The checkpoint path fsyncs only wal_path_. The new wal.log name created by SwapWalFile is not synced in its directory. RecycleWalFile then deletes rotated WAL files once the checkpoint is marked synced. After a power loss, the checkpoint entry can be missing while the rotated files are gone. Fsync wal_dir_ after the swap and before last_synced_ckp_ts_ is set.

Skip the checkpoint sync gate when the WAL stream has failed.
A failed ofs_.write or ofs_.flush() leaves the checkpoint entry unwritten, but fsync on wal_path_ can still succeed. The gate then sets last_synced_ckp_ts_, and RecycleWalFile() deletes the rotated wal.log.* files that replay needs. Gate the sync on the stream state, for example ofs_.good().
