Enable the DPDK driver to use vfio-pci NICs:

  • Allow ports without a kernel netdev to use their TAP interface index.
  • Validate queue limits and report the supported worker count.
  • Check IOMMU groups before changing any driver bindings.

Validation includes the init and DPDK suites, dataplane port tests, clippy, and formatting.
VLAB with e1000e and one worker passes BGP/BFD, LLDP, and inter-VPC connectivity.

VLAB requires fabricator#2165 for IOMMU/topology configuration and fabric#1704 for hugepage requests and interface MTU.

Known limitations:

  • QEMU e1000 (82540EM) advertises an unusable second TX queue, causing control-plane packet loss.
  • e1000e uses software fallback for control-plane classification.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add DPDK queue-limit checks and support ports without kernel netdevs. They also add a VFIO IOMMU-group preflight check before DPDK startup reserves hugepages or binds devices.

Changes: DPDK port setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Device queue-limit checks
dpdk/src/dev.rs, dpdk/src/dev/rss_tests.rs
Device configuration checks RX and TX queue totals, including hairpin queues, against device limits. It returns a directional error when a request exceeds the limit.
Port queue setup and shortfall diagnostics
dataplane/src/drivers/dpdk/port.rs
Port setup calculates queue counts and translates device queue-limit errors into diagnostics about the worker capacity that fits.
Optional netdev and control-plane mapping
dataplane/src/drivers/dpdk/port.rs, dataplane/src/runtime.rs
Ports can have no kernel interface index. Control-plane mapping returns an error if it needs an unavailable index, and link logs report the netdev when present or indicate that none exists.

VFIO startup preflight

Layer / File(s) Summary
IOMMU group validation
init/src/vfio.rs
The new module reports missing or unreadable groups, no-IOMMU conditions, and incompatible bound group members. Tests cover these cases and accepted drivers.
Startup preflight wiring
init/src/main.rs
DPDK startup checks resolved VFIO PCI devices and stops initialization with blocker messages before hugepage reservation or device binding.

Suggested reviewers: qmonnet

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d747d

An unreadable IOMMU-group entry can let an incompatible device group pass startup preflight. Fix the error handling before merge if practical.

Explanation

The title "dataplane: support vfio-pci NICs" matches the main change: enabling the DPDK driver to use vfio-pci NICs. It covers the core objective. It does not mention the queue-limit validation or IOMMU group checks, which is expected for a short title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the goal of enabling the DPDK driver to use vfio-pci NICs. It lists the three main changes: TAP interface index for ports without a netdev, queue-limit validation with worker count reporting, and IOMMU group checks before driver binding. It also gives validation steps and known limitations, which match the changeset.

VFIO ports have no kernel netdev, so allow their TAP index to identify
them. Reject ports with neither a TAP nor a kernel netdev.

Stop dropping unreadable group members in the VFIO preflight.

members.flatten() discards Err items from fs::read_dir. An unreadable member is never checked against group_safe, so blockers can report no problem for a group that contains an incompatible driver. check_vfio then passes, and the requested device is bound to vfio-pci even though its IOMMU group is not valid for VFIO. bind_to_vfio_pci checks only the requested device, so this preflight is the only check that catches a sibling driver.

Report the entry error as VfioBlocker::Unreadable, as the read_dir failure above it already does.
