Mask host part of IPv6 addresses before pseudonymising - #340
IPv6 pseudonymization now clears the lower 64 address bits before encryption. For IPv6 socket families, dnstap parsing now converts valid IPv4-mapped IPv6 query and response addresses to IPv4-form addresses. Tests cover these changes and update an expected HLL hash.
For IPv6 socket families, unpackDNSTap converts valid IPv4-mapped IPv6 query and response addresses to IPv4-form addresses. Tests cover these outputs and compare configured extra addresses regardless of validity flags.
IPv4-mapped clients now retain distinct identities, but clients configured through mapped ignore prefixes are no longer excluded from minimisation. Normalize those prefixes; the remaining test additions are bounded follow-ups.

Explanation
Title check
The title clearly states the main change: masking the host part of IPv6 addresses before pseudonymisation.
Linked Issues check
Check skipped because no linked issues were found for this pull request.
Out of Scope Changes check
Check skipped because no linked issues were found for this pull request.
Description check
The description directly matches the changes. It states that IPv6 pseudonymisation uses only the network half and mentions unmapping valid IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses in the dnstap parser.

Add a test row for a 15-byte IPv4-mapped prefix with an invalid flag.
TestUnpackIPs has only one IPv4-mapped row, and its address is valid. The unmap guard at pkg/dnstap/message.go:177 checks ValidQueryAddr first, so the current code keeps the padded IPv6 value for an invalid address. No row exercises this input. If that flag check is removed, Unmap() returns the 4-byte 192.0.2.0, and no current row fails. The row below would fail in that case, because its 16-byte expectation would not match.
🧪 Suggested test row
// IPv4-mapped IPv6 address
{mpas("::ffff:192.0.2.54"), mpas("192.0.2.54"), true, mpas("::ffff:192.0.2.53"), mpas("192.0.2.53"), true, dnstap.SocketFamily_INET6},
+ // truncated IPv4-mapped IPv6 address: padded, not valid, must not be unmapped+ {mpas("::ffff:192.0.2.54")[:15], mpas("::ffff:192.0.2.0"), false, mpas("2001:db8::53"), nil, true, dnstap.SocketFamily_INET6},

Review comment at @pkg/dnstap/message_test.go at line 420:
Add a TestUnpackIPs table row beside the existing IPv4-mapped case for a 15-byte
truncated mapped address with ValidQueryAddr false; assert the padded IPv6 value
remains unmapped and preserve the other expected values shown by the test’s
table structure.
Add mixed mapped and plain IPv6 rows to TestUnpackIPs.
The only IPv4-mapped row maps both fields. A regression that unmaps only when both fields are mapped would still pass. Add rows that map one field and leave the other plain.
The current implementation unmaps each address independently. The gap is in regression coverage, not in production behavior.

Add two mixed-address cases to the table in TestUnpackIPs: one with an
IPv4-mapped query address and plain IPv6 response address, and one with a plain
IPv6 query address and IPv4-mapped response address. Assert that only the mapped
address is unmapped in each case.

UnmarshalText implements the encoding.TextUnmarshaler interface. The IP range is expected in a form accepted by ParseIPRange. It returns an error if *r is not the IPRange zero value.
#### func (IPRange) Valid deprecated
func (r IPRange) Valid() bool
Valid reports whether r.From() and r.To() are both non-zero and obey the documented requirements: address families match, and From is less than or equal to To.
Deprecated: use the correctly named and identical IsValid method instead.
#### type IPSet ¶
type IPSet struct {
// contains filtered or unexported fields
}
IPSet represents a set of IP addresses.
IPSet is safe for concurrent use. The zero value is a valid value representing a set of no IPs. Use IPSetBuilder to construct IPSets.
Example ¶
package main
import (
"fmt"
"net/netip"
"go4.org/netipx"
)
func main() {
var b netipx.IPSetBuilder
b.AddPrefix(netip.MustParsePrefix("10.0.0.0/8"))
b.RemovePrefix(netip.MustParsePrefix("10.0.0.0/16"))
b.AddRange(netipx.IPRangeFrom(
netip.MustParseAddr("fed0::0400"),
netip.MustParseAddr("fed0::04ff"),
))
s, _ := b.IPSet()
fmt.Println("Ranges:")
for _, r := range s.Ranges() {
fmt.Printf(" %s - %s\n", r.From(), r.To())
}
fmt.Println("Prefixes:")
for _, p := range s.Prefixes() {
fmt.Printf(" %s\n", p)
}
}
Output:
Ranges:
10.1.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
fed0::400 - fed0::4ff
Prefixes:
10.1.0.0/16
10.2.0.0/15
10.4.0.0/14
10.8.0.0/13
10.16.0.0/12
10.32.0.0/11
10.64.0.0/10
10.128.0.0/9
fed0::400/120
#### func (*IPSet) Contains ¶
func (s *IPSet) Contains(ip netip.Addr) bool
Contains reports whether ip is in s. If ip has an IPv6 zone, Contains returns false, because IPSets do not track zones.
#### func (*IPSet) ContainsPrefix ¶
func (s *IPSet) ContainsPrefix(p netip.Prefix) bool
ContainsPrefix reports whether all IPs in p are in s.
#### func (*IPSet) ContainsRange ¶
func (s *IPSet) ContainsRange(r IPRange) bool
ContainsRange reports whether all IPs in r are in s.
#### func (*IPSet) Equal ¶
func (s *IPSet) Equal(o *IPSet) bool
Equal reports whether s and o represent the same set of IP addresses.
#### func (*IPSet) Overlaps ¶
func (s *IPSet) Overlaps(b *IPSet) bool
Overlaps reports whether any IP in b is also in s.
#### func (*IPSet) OverlapsPrefix ¶
func (s *IPSet) OverlapsPrefix(p netip.Prefix) bool
OverlapsPrefix reports whether any IP in p is also in s.
#### func (*IPSet) OverlapsRange ¶
func (s *IPSet) OverlapsRange(r IPRange) bool
OverlapsRange reports whether any IP in r is also in s.
#### func (*IPSet) Prefixes ¶
func (s *IPSet) Prefixes() []netip.Prefix
Prefixes returns the minimum and sorted set of IP prefixes that covers s.

Keep the IPv4 form of mapped ignore prefixes.
With the new Unmap() at pkg/dnstap/message.go:178, clientIPIsIgnored checks 192.0.2.54 against the set. A configured ::ffff:192.0.2.0/120 entry no longer matches, so those clients are minimised. Add the unmapped prefix when the ignore list loads.
Suggested fix
b.AddPrefix(prefix)
+ if prefix.Addr().Is4In6() && prefix.Bits() >= 96 {+ // Query addresses are unmapped before lookup; add the IPv4 form too.+ b.AddPrefix(netip.PrefixFrom(prefix.Addr().Unmap(), prefix.Bits()-96))+ }

Review comment at @pkg/dnstap/message.go at line 178:
Update the ignore-list prefix loading flow used by clientIPIsIgnored to also add
the IPv4 equivalent of IPv4-mapped prefixes with at least 96 bits, converting
the prefix length by subtracting 96. Keep the original prefix and existing
handling of other prefixes unchanged so lookups still match after m.QueryAddr is
unmapped.

I do not think it is a big deal if we don't ignore a small subset of IP addresses that we don't expect to see in the first place. We don't need this right now. Just create an issue perhaps, so we remember it.

--title "Support IPv4-mapped IPv6 ignore prefixes after address unmapping" \
--body "$(cat <<'EOF'## SummaryTrack a deferred edge case from PR #340. The dnstap parser unmaps valid IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses before downstream processing. Ignore-list entries in mapped IPv6 form can then fail to match the resulting IPv4 addresses.For example, an ignore entry of `::ffff:192.0.2.0/120` should also match the unmapped client address `192.0.2.54`.## Scope and rationaleRequested by @zluudg as a follow-up rather than a change required in PR #340. These addresses are not expected in normal input, so this edge case does not need an immediate fix.## Required changes- In the ignore-list prefix loading flow in `pkg/runner/ignore.go`, retain each original prefix.- For IPv4-mapped IPv6 prefixes with prefix lengths of at least 96 bits, also add the IPv4 equivalent. Subtract 96 from the prefix length.- Preserve existing handling of other prefixes.- Add regression coverage in `pkg/runner/ignore_test.go`.Related address normalization occurs in `pkg/dnstap/message.go`. The ignore lookup uses `clientIPIsIgnored`.## Acceptance criteria- `::ffff:192.0.2.0/120` matches unmapped IPv4 clients within `192.0.2.0/24`.- Addresses outside that range do not match that entry.- Boundary cases `/96` and `/128` map to IPv4 `/0` and `/32`, respectively.- Ordinary IPv4 and native IPv6 ignore prefixes retain their existing behavior.- Mapped prefixes shorter than `/96` retain their existing handling.## References- PR: https://github.com/dnstapir/edm/pull/340- Review discussion: https://github.com/dnstapir/edm/pull/340#discussion_r4412324449EOF)"

@zluudg Understood. Created #341 and assigned it to you to track mapped ignore-prefix support. The issue includes the required changes and regression test criteria. This can remain a follow-up outside PR #340.

For IPv6 addresses the identity should only be based on the network half of the address.
(Also changes the behavior of the dnstap parser to unmap valid IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses due to above.)
