Add WithSliceDeepMerge option to deep-merge slice elements and append trailing source items - #324
Adds WithSliceDeepMerge so slice elements can be deep-merged by index without forcing config.Overwrite = true:
Why WithSliceDeepCopy was overriding non-empty fields: WithSliceDeepCopy sets config.Overwrite = true globally, which overwrites non-empty destination struct fields inside slice elements even when the caller only wanted empty destination fields filled from src.
Why dstElement addressability is preserved for structs (merge.go): Calling reflect.ValueOf(dstElement.Interface()) on a reflect.Struct slice element creates an unaddressable value copy (CanSet() == false), preventing deepMerge from setting struct fields. We keep reflect.Struct slice elements addressable while unwrapping non-struct interface values (such as []map[string]interface{} in issue220_test.go), and for []interface{} elements holding structs by value we merge into an addressable reflect.New copy and write it back to the slice index.
Trailing elements: If src has more elements than dst, trailing elements from src (src.Slice(dst.Len(), src.Len())) are appended.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an option to deep-merge slices, combining overlapping elements and appending remaining source elements.
With override enabled, source fields replace destination fields during slice merging.
Deep merging supports struct values wrapped in interfaces, including values in slices stored in maps.
Bug Fixes
Deep slice merging returns an error when source and destination slices have different types or contain incompatible elements.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds WithSliceDeepMerge to merge overlapping slice elements and append source elements beyond the destination length. It updates direct-slice and map-contained slice processing, and adds tests for these cases, including WithOverride and interface-held structs.

Summary
Add the slice deep-merge option merge.go
Config gains an internal flag, and WithSliceDeepMerge enables the option for merge processing.
Merge elements and append source values merge.go, issue233_test.go
Direct-slice and map-contained slice paths deep-merge overlapping elements and append remaining source elements. Tests cover default merging, WithOverride, interface-held structs, nil destination slots, and an error for incompatible element types.
Deep-merging certain mismatched slice values can panic instead of returning an error. Add the direct-path type check before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: a new WithSliceDeepMerge option that deep-merges slice elements and appends trailing source items. The raw summary confirms merge.go adds WithSliceDeepMerge, sliceDeepMerge handling in deepMerge, and appending of trailing source elements, with matching tests in issue233_test.go. The title is long (91 characters, 12 words) but stays on the primary change and is not vague or misleading.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue [#233] requires a deep-merge option that merges overlapping slice elements by index, keeps non-empty destination fields, fills empty destination fields from src, and appends src elements beyond len(dst). merge.go adds WithSliceDeepMerge, which sets sliceDeepMerge. That flag skips the whole-slice replacement branch (the !sliceDeepMerge guard) and routes to the element-wise loop. For plain struct elements, dst.Index(i) stays addressable, so deepMerge fills only empty fields and does not set Overwrite. When src.Len() > dst.Len(), src.Slice(dst.Len(), src.Len()) is appended. Interface-held struct elements are copied into an addressable reflect.New value, merged, and written back at the same index. issue233_test.go covers: default merge with preserved non-empty dst fields and filled empty fields (TestWithSliceDeepMerge); WithOverride combined with the option (TestWithSliceDeepMergeAndOverride); map-held []interface{} structs (TestWithSliceDeepMergeInterfaceStructs); direct []interface{} structs with a nil slot filled and trailing append (TestWithSliceDeepMergeDirectInterfaceStructs); and an error for an incompatible scalar source element (TestWithSliceDeepMergeIncompatibleInterfaceStructError). The optional requests in the issue (tuning through WithOverwriteWithEmptyValue, configurable trailing-element handling) are phrased as 'nice to have' or 'may be done'. They are not core acceptance criteria. Their absence does not fail this check. Note: tests were not executed in this review. The verdict rests on source reading of the merge.go diff and the test file.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All production changes in merge.go serve [#233]. They add the sliceDeepMerge and retainedCopies Config fields, the WithSliceDeepMerge option, the trailing-append logic, and the guard that excludes the new option from whole-slice replacement. issue233_test.go contains only tests for the new option. The shared branch sliceDeepCopy || sliceDeepMerge also changes WithSliceDeepCopy behavior. Deep copy now returns an error on slice type mismatch, and it copies, merges, and writes back interface-held structs. These effects follow from the shared code path and are not unrelated changes. The PR description does not state these deep-copy effects explicitly. retainedCopies is appended to but never read. This is a code-quality concern, not a scope violation.

Keep destination slice elements settable in WithSliceDeepMerge.

Keep destination slice elements settable in WithSliceDeepMerge.
Both slice paths copy each overlapping destination element with reflect.ValueOf(dstElement.Interface()). That copy is not addressable, so deepMerge cannot assign its fields. The struct-field path at merge.go:248-249 and the map-value path at merge.go:188-189 both have this copy. In the current code, TestWithSliceDeepMerge and TestWithSliceDeepMergeAndOverride fail. Field2 is not filled, and Field1 is not overridden.
Pass the destination element directly in sliceDeepMerge mode. Keep the source conversion. Keep the existing destination conversion for sliceDeepCopy.

In both the struct-field and map-value slice paths that call deepMerge, keep
destination elements settable by passing the original dstElement when
sliceDeepMerge is enabled; retain the existing destination conversion for
sliceDeepCopy and the source conversion in both modes.

Honor WithOverwriteWithEmptyValue for empty source slices.
If the source is an empty, non-nil slice and the destination has elements, WithSliceDeepMerge skips ordinary replacement. The element loop and trailing append also make no change. Consequently, WithOverwriteWithEmptyValue cannot clear the destination slice, including when that slice is a map value. Handle the empty-source overwrite before the element-wise merge in both paths. Review comment at @merge.go at line 166:
Update the slice merge logic guarded by WithSliceDeepMerge so an empty, non-nil
source slice with WithOverwriteWithEmptyValue replaces a populated destination
with an empty slice before element-wise merging begins. Apply this behavior in
both merge paths, including map values, while preserving existing behavior for
other slice inputs and overwrite settings.
Make interface-held structs writable before merging.
When an overlapping []interface{} element contains a struct, srcElement becomes the concrete struct but dstElement remains an interface. deepMerge then reaches the struct through dstElement.Elem(), which is not settable. Source values for empty destination fields can therefore remain unmerged. This affects both direct slices and slices stored in maps. Merge a writable copy of the contained struct, then set the merged value back into the interface element.

Update the overlapping-slice merge logic around deepMerge so interface-held
structs are merged through a writable copy of the contained value, then written
back to the destination interface element. Preserve the existing behavior for
other element types and ensure this works for both direct slices and slices
stored in maps.

Keep each copyElem reachable until merge returns, or visited can skip later elements.
reflect.New(...).Elem() returns an addressable value. deepMerge records its address in visited as a uintptr (merge.go:70-81). The map does not keep the value alive. Once the write-back finishes, copyElem is unreferenced and can be collected. A later reflect.New of the same type can then reuse that address. The lookup at merge.go:75-77 matches the stale entry and returns nil, so the source values for that element are not merged. The result is a silent, timing-dependent skip. The risk can be higher for large []interface{} slices of structs, which allocate more copies.
Store each copy on the per-call Config. merge allocates Config once per call (merge.go:410), and deepMerge shares that pointer. The copies then stay reachable until merge returns.

Keep each addressable copyElem alive for the duration of the merge so visited
cannot match a reused address and skip merging. Retain these copies on the
per-call Config shared by deepMerge, covering both copyElem creation paths, and
release them when merge returns.

Overlapping scalar elements stay unmerged in direct slices.
With WithSliceDeepMerge, a direct slice element that is a non-struct scalar is copied with reflect.ValueOf at merge.go:26-28. The merge writes into that non-settable copy, and only isIfaceStruct writes back at merge.go:33-35. For []int{0} merged from []int{5}, the destination remains 0 and the source value is dropped without an error.
The WithSliceDeepMerge doc comment describes unqualified overlap merging, and the mergo default fills an empty destination from a non-empty source. The scalar exclusion in the docs applies only to WithSliceDeepCopy. Fix this for the new option. Use an addressable element for scalar overlaps in the sliceDeepMerge path. Write it back to dst.Index(i), as the isIfaceStruct branch does. Keep the WithSliceDeepCopy behavior unchanged, because its documentation describes that limitation. Apply the same correction to the map-contained slice loop.

Add a direct []interface{} struct test for WithSliceDeepMerge.
TestWithSliceDeepMergeInterfaceStructs says it covers direct []interface{} slices. Its body covers only the map-held path. No other test covers the direct interface-held struct branch at merge.go:258-273, including the write-back at line 272. A regression in that branch would not be detected.

Check concrete element types before merging a copied struct.
If an overlapping []interface{} destination element contains a struct and the source element contains a scalar, this branch copies the struct and calls deepMerge with the scalar. The struct path calls src.Field(i), which panics for a non-struct source. Both direct and map-contained slices can reach this path. Reject incompatible concrete element types with an error before the recursive merge. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep nil interface elements settable.
If an overlapping destination element is nil in a []interface{}, this branch replaces its settable slice position with reflect.ValueOf(nil). That value is invalid. deepMerge then cannot assign a non-nil source element, so the merge silently leaves the destination element nil. Skip unwrapping nil destination interfaces in both slice paths. Extract the shared element-merge loop into one helper.
The map-contained slice path (Lines 189-210) and the direct slice path (Lines 261-282) now hold the same logic. The logic covers four things:
the interface-struct copy
the type check
the retainedCopies bookkeeping
the write-back and trailing append
The earlier review findings (writable copy, type mismatch, nil slots, address reuse) each had to be applied to both paths. A future fix to one path can easily miss the other.
Add one helper that takes the destination slice and source slice and returns the merged slice. Both call sites then reduce to a single call. The direct path then does dst.Set(result). The map path does dstSlice = result.

Reject mismatched slice types before direct deep merging.
Merge checks only the root types. A same-typed struct can contain an interface field whose values point to different slice types. Interface and pointer dispatch then reaches this branch without a slice type check. When the source slice is longer, reflect.AppendSlice can panic.
