pattern_scan uses re.finditer, which resumes scanning after each match, so overlapping matches are dropped. _check_pattern_present then trusts that list for both offset and count, producing a wrong verdict:
pattern_present "41 41" on b"AAAA" (three overlapping hits at 0,1,2) reported only 2 matches → count: 3 was REFUTED and count: 2 was VERIFIED.
Real binaries with int3/nop padding (55 48 89 e5 cc cc cc cc cc c3) returned CC CC at [4, 6] instead of [4, 5, 6, 7].
Root cause
In reverify/disasm.py, pattern_scan compiled the AOB tokens into a plain regex and ran re.finditer(regex, data). A trailing match consumes its bytes, so the next search start skips any position inside the previous match.
Fix
Wrap the compiled regex in a zero-width lookahead (?=...):
The lookahead is zero-width, so a match is reported at every start position where the pattern begins. Non-overlapping patterns and the empty-pattern behaviour are unchanged.
Changes
reverify/disasm.py: one-line regex wrap in pattern_scan.
reverify/tests/test_verifier.py: test_pattern_overlapping_count (count 2 vs 3 on b"AAAA").
Testing (reproducible)
Environment: Python 3.13 (managed venv), pure-Python engine (capstone/lief not installed → engine tests skipped, as upstream).
python -m unittest reverify.tests.test_disasm reverify.tests.test_verifier
Ran 34 tests in 0.123s
OK (skipped=2)
Red/green evidence: on unpatched main, the two new tests FAIL (count:2 wrongly VERIFIED, count:3 wrongly REFUTED); with the patch they PASS. Verified known-answers:
Wrap the compiled AOB regex in a zero-width lookahead so re.finditer
reports a match at every start position. Previously finditer resumed
after each match and dropped overlapping hits, causing pattern_present
to report a wrong offset/count (false VERIFIED / REFUTED).
Non-overlapping patterns and the empty-pattern behaviour are unchanged.
Adds regression tests in test_disasm.py and test_verifier.py.

Pattern scanning now finds overlapping matches. Tests cover overlapping offsets, wildcard and padding matches, empty patterns, and occurrence-count verification.

Summary
Scan and verify overlapping matches reverify/disasm.py, reverify/tests/test_disasm.py, reverify/tests/test_verifier.py
pattern_scan uses a zero-width lookahead to report overlapping matches. Tests check scan offsets and verify that "41 41" appears three times in b"AAAA", not twice.
The overlapping scan change is mergeable with a small test improvement: add overlapping wildcard input so future regressions in that behavior are detected.

Explanation
Issue #28 is an active direct link. The supplied PR evidence shows that pattern_scan now uses a zero-width lookahead, so overlapping matches are reported. The evidence covers AAAA with 41 41, CC padding, wildcard patterns, empty patterns, and pattern_present count verification. The reported tests pass with the change.

The 41 ?? assertion on 413f413f41 expects [0, 2]. Those matches do not overlap, so a scanner that resumes after each match also returns [0, 2]. This assertion cannot detect dropped wildcard overlaps. Add an input where wildcard matches overlap. For b"AAA", the overlapping scan returns [0, 1], and a non-overlapping scan returns [0].

Review comment at @reverify/tests/test_disasm.py at line 42:
Add an overlapping wildcard assertion to the test containing the existing
`pattern_scan` wildcard check: verify that scanning `b"AAA"` for `"41 ??"`
returns `[0, 1]`. Keep the existing non-overlapping case unchanged.
